Anniversary Celebration

In honor of our upcoming 45th wedding anniversary, last night we took a bottle of our favorite Burgundy Grand Cru to Redd Wood for dinner. I chose the French onion soup, followed by the halibut grilled over a sweet, corn-based sauce and my wife chose a tuna tartare followed by Coq au vin to pair with this fabulous Pinot noir. At 12 years of age, it has held its color beautifully, with virtually no browning. The aromas were less fruit-forward than some Pinots, as would would expect from an aging Burgundy.

This 2013 Clos des Lambrays was just as fantastic as we remembered from our visit to the winery. Aromas of forest, earth and mushrooms predominated, though there were still hints of darker cherries and other red fruits. The immediate sensation was that of lively acidity, followed by a lush, round mouthfeel. Lots of dark cherry and earthy, mushroom like flavors filled my mouth with an incredibly pleasant sensation. The tannins were velvety smooth and the taste lingered for a long time. The wine was a perfect match for the caramelized onions and melted gruyere with my soup, but actually may have been a bit "too big" for my halibut. It was apparently a lovely match with the tuna, as well as the chicken. This truly was a special wine for a very special occasion. It is certainly not inexpensive, but is really worth the splurge. As Bugundy Grand Crus go, it is on the less expensive side (and as my wife likes to point out, the winemaker was charming and had a very cute dog named Tosca)!
