A great wine!!!!!

Last night was just a special night. We had several things to celebrate and were able to do so with great friends. We had dinner at a fine, new local restaurant, Redd Wood, and I brought a bottle of wine to start the festivities. "Y" from Chateau d'Yquem has long been one of our favorites, and this 2018 did not disappoint.

We all tasted the wine before anyone's food had arrived (or even been ordered, for that matter) and not surprisingly, the initial reactions were quite positive. The wine had nice aromas of citrus fruits and, to me, a bit of the grassiness expected from Sauvignon blanc. The first sip demonstrated a smooth, velvety mouthfeel, evidence of the Sémillon component to the blend. We sipped the wine slowly, awaiting our appetizers and entrees. When my pissaladiere and others' mussels and fluke slices arrived, it was not at all surprising that the matches were spot on. This is not only a great wine, but one that is quite versatile in its pairing. It is elegant and yet, understated, without being overpowering or insisting upon "stealing the show".
The most surprising aspect of the wine, however, came when the main courses arrived. It paired beautifully with several different fish dishes (not unexpected), but one of us ordered a steak and commented that the wine was beautiful with the steak. He commented that the features of the Sauvignon blanc were accentuated and paired beautifully with the body of the steak.
This is not a wine for everyday consumption (unless cost is no object), but it is a highly refined, elegant wine that ranks as about my favorite white wine! It has a medium (almost full) body, medium to high acidity with a smooth, round texture. It is refreshing in its opening and then velvety on the palate and finish. It will remain one of my "go to" wines for special occasions!
